"After 7 years, corrupted database, no developer response - avoid at all costs!"

    by Fredo33 on March 10, 2008

Pros: Seven years ago, this was an excellent bookmark manager. But the developer has not kept the product up to date and it has serious flaws.

Cons: I have thousands of bookmarks in hundreds of folders. I periodically make backups of the database. Nevertheless, I discovered that about 4 months ago, hundreds of my bookmarks were moved from within my folders to the very end of the folder list - which I had no reason to notice without scrolling to the bottom of the folder list. What a conundrum: lose four months of data, or try to recover the current bookmark file.

I contacted the developer, Daniel Liu, daily for four days. No response.

With the help of my favorite editor (Vim), I was able to edit the latest bookmark file, remove all unique Compass html tags. I found that many entries not only included meta descriptions, but also javascript embedded in the website header section!! Indeed, some entries included portions of the website html body!. It took hours and hours to clean up the corrupted file. Never again!

Based upon ratings, downloads, features, and release frequency, I have selected the following as the top bookmark managers:

    Link Commander

    URLBase

    Bookmark Buddy

    InBookmarks

I am currently evaluating Link Commander and URLBase and will ultimately go with one of these products.

    "Still the best"

    by stu2421 on August 5, 2005

Pros: Nothing beats direct "searching as I type"

my 6700 links and notes in 570 folders and

    getting the info >immediatly<.

Personally I don't need an update and

stability only was an issue when i had

10000+ links and way too many notes

    (export took care of that).

Check it out and click around, there's

more than first hits the eyes.

"Good product; last updated in 2001"

    on May 27, 2004

Summary: Compass was an excellent bookmark manager, but it hasn't been updated since 2001. I finally gave up and replaced it with URLBase. read more

Summary: This product worked well back in the dark ages.

Will not work with Netscape beyond
V4.7.9. Really needs updating very badly. Author does not care. read more

"Great design killed by a few fatal flaws."

    on January 20, 2002

Summary: I have to vote a Thumbs Down on Compass 2.83, which is unfortunate; because except for two very major problems Compass would have been the best bookmarks manager I tested. After reviewing all of the significant bookmarks software and downloading and ... read more
